Touching down in El Prat

I’ve just come back to Barcelona from a trip to London. Every time I pass through Barcelona airport I am struck by the dubious wisdom of naming an international airport something which is a denigrating slang term for ‘buttocks’ or ‘idiot’ in (British) English.

From a local perspective, the name ‘El Prat’ makes sense; its the name of the area in which the airport is based, but really, it’s the equivalent of us calling Heathrow airport ‘Gilipollas airport’. Didn’t anyone notice this at the planning/pre-inauguration stage? Or did they just not care?

Either way, it makes for an amusing start to any British holiday-maker’s stay in Catalunya!
